Diabetes and Yoga
Dr. Lisa Nelson, co-author of Yoga and Diabetes, explains that the practice of yoga, even poses that are done while seated, works through the stress reduction pathway to bring down cortisol levels, which can help change blood glucose levels into a more normal range. In addition, yoga has been shown to help with balance, muscle strength, flexibility, and improving circulation.
Peggy’s Easy Yoga for Diabetes DVD presents easy yoga exercises that research suggests can be helpful for people living with diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes.
The multi-part yoga routines include:
- Standing/Seated Breathing and Stretching Warm-ups2. Reclining/Seated For Hips and Lower Back
- Reclining/Seated Additional Stretches for Hips, Back, and Thighs
- Side Lying/Seated Sequences for Hips, Back and Thighs
- On the Belly/Seated Poses for the Back, Chest, and Torso
- Standing/Seated Yoga Pose Flow/Three Variations
- Reclining/Seated Body Scan Relaxation
The documentary seen on PBS is included. The documentary introduces Peggy’s real-life students whose strength and balance has been improved though simple yoga practice.
